Welcome to the Sun-2-Ice Scientific Research Program
The Sun-2-Ice research program studies, models, and tests the following interlinked, multi-disciplinary physical processes at the frontier of the dynamic Sun-Earth system:
coronal mass ejection (CME) initiation and evolution
solar energetic particle (SEP) acceleration and transport
SEP access to the polar caps and effects in the atmosphere
SEP signatures in ice cores
We use archival, current, and future observations of the Sun, corona, interplanetary space, SEPs, upper atmosphere, and ice cores, along with state-of-the-art numerical models of processes and of each region to understand the chain linking solar dynamics with SEP acceleration, propagation, impact on Earth’s atmosphere, photochemistry, precipitation, and ice chemistry.
